Ms. Hays also owns the Alaska Experience Bed and Breakfast Resort in Homer. She formerly owned Alaska Natural Seafoods, a commercial fishing operation for 19 years and was also involved with Abundance Life Pet Food, a holistic pet food corporation. She has been a realty agent for more than 25 years, although when she first came to Homer, the only job she could find was in the fisheries doing cannery work, or deck handing on fishing boats. After receiving her six pack license, she began her halibut chartering career. She then sat for her 1600 ton Masters license and returned to Homer where she bought her own commercial fishing boat, the Arch Cape.
