Why
He
is an Expert:
Mr. Barker joined Old Mutual in 2000, when they had no United States presence, “nor did they have any significant presence,” he remarks. At the time he retired, the company was at the top five in the new business levels in all of their major lines of business, and top one offshore. Additionally, Mr. Barker engaged the offshore development of Old Mutual Bermuda Ltd. from a purchase for one dollar that is now worth approximately $1 billion. “The challenges were credibility and scale,” he remembers. “The credibility had been jeopardized by the previous (not Old Mutual) owner. This problem was overcome by harnessing the worldwide strength and visibility of Old Mutual’s global team. The scale problem was overcome by stretching the business from pan-Atlantic to truly global.”
Best Advice:
“Focus on what you can do well; outsource to others what they can do better. Don’t fool yourself which is which.”
Passionate about:
“My family, success and work success.”
