Dr. Blizzard published articles on the role of the doctor in civil defense in the University of Western Ontario's Medical Journal in 1962 and on flight surgeon-jet jockey in the Jamaica Air Wing Journal in 1969. He also wrote an article about patient care in-flight health and welfare. He is the author of a Canadian government publication called 'Patient Care in Flight.' He is the chairman of a local study group and the author of a 1988 government publication called 'Flight Times and Fight Duty Times in Canada.'

Why He is an Expert:
Dr. Blizzard’s work is highly specialized, the result of many years of training in both the medical field and in aviation. “There were two things I wanted to do in my life,” he recalls. “One was to be a doctor, and two was to fly planes.” Why not combine the two? He spent 15 years in the Air Force, holding many responsible positions, including that of advisor in aviation medicine to the surgeon general. One of the highlights of his career was being the first doctor on site for Operation Magnet, the airlift of the first Vietnamese refugees to Canada from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

“Set goals, work towards them and never give up.”

Passionate about:
“I'm passionate about passing on the information to a younger generation, particularly minorities. I’m passionate about giving them advice so they can follow in my footsteps and have good professional careers.”

Biography Excerpt:
Throughout his Air Force career, Dr. Blizzard worked as a full-time base and flight surgeon. He had the distinction of carrying out flying training on two types of Air Force jets while there - the Tutor and the T-33. He obtained his Wings and becoming a military jet pilot at the age of 40, although jet pilots usually do this at a much younger age. Dr. Blizzard has written and presented several scientific papers and received numerous awards for his work, including the Harry Jerome Award for Excellence in Health Science from the Black Business and Professional Association and the Forrest M. and Pamela Bird Award for exceptional contributions to the safety of civil aviation.

Cambridge Who's Who: What are some of the qualities a person pursuing a career in aviation medicine should possess?  
DR. STEPHEN V BLIZZARD :  You should have a love for both medicine and aviation; also, maintain the ability to work hard at both disciplines. Keep abreast of new developments in the fields.

What would you consider your life’s motto to be?
My motto all along has been that of a RAF [Royal Air Force] Squadron – it was the Trinidad squadron during the war; the 74 squadron in the Royal Air Force. The motto is, “I fear no man.”

If you could have lunch with anybody, alive or dead, who would it be?
Barack Obama.
