Biography Excerpt:
Ellen G. Kennedy is a retired registered nurse who was formerly stationed at Bert Fish Medical Center, an acute care facility providing rehabilitation and emergency services. She holds more than 25 years of professional experience, with expertise in emergency room and triage nursing. Considering the high level of pressure she underwent for all those years, Ms. Kennedy learned to keep up the pace and deliver quality, innovative patient care. This is due in-part to her stint as a second lieutenant nurse for the US Air Force's medical mission to Peru, which took place from 1968 to 1970.

Interview Excerpt

Cambridge Who's Who: When did you know that you wanted to be a nurse?
ELLEN G. KENNEDY RN:  I’ve known ever since I was a little girl. No one else in my family is in the medical field; my mother worked for the government in Washington, DC and my dad was an accountant. I was never at the top of my class in school and, when I applied to approximately 35 nursing schools, I was only accepted into two of them. I became more determined. I started my junior year and by my senior year I was accepted into St. Mary’s Nursing School. I did well there and made the honor roll all through school. I had to work really hard at it. Back then, I had that kind of determination. None of my children became nurses; they can’t stand the sight of blood!

Did your emotions ever get tangled up while working in the emergency room?
I think your emotions could get tangled up if you let them, but when you’re busy and you have plenty of stuff to do, you really focus, you do it and you deal with your emotions later.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your career?
I think helping people was the most rewarding aspect of my career
