Biography Excerpt:
Dr. Irma Ruth Williams is a medical doctor whose expertise is in anesthesiology and perioperative medicine. She did not take the easiest or most direct route to achieving her success. She grew up a "military brat" with working class parents who made her feel she could do anything she wanted. Her younger brother had cerebral palsy and had multiple operations between the ages of four and 17 years. She watched physicians change his life and always dreamed she would be a doctor.

IRMA
RUTH
WILLIAMS
: In January 2008, I traveled to Belize to do medical missionary work. This was an invaluable experience – both personally and professionally – which required us to be creative with our resources. Being in a Third World country makes you appreciate the everyday conveniences of being an anesthesiologist in America, where we take for granted monitors, equipment, drugs and the backup of other specialists. I also worked the past nine months in New Orleans at Tulane and was given the chance to fill a need for the post-Katrina patients, anesthesia residents and students. Tulane is a tertiary center that gets the sickest of patients with some of the most rare and complicated cases. I have often worked out of small rural hospitals where I might be the only anesthesiologist.`
What is the most difficult obstacle or challenge you faced in pursuit of your goals?
Being a non-conventional student going to medical school at 40 years old. As a mature adult and mother, you still have your family and social obligations, while medical school and residency are all-encompassing jobs. My tenacity and life-long dreams allowed me to overcome these obstacles.
What is your motto?
Do what you love. It will make you and everyone you deal with happier.
