Why F is an Expert:
Medications used in mental health and developmental disabilities.

Best Advice:
Volunteer. Do whatever you have to do to get involved in whatever line of pharmacy you wish to pursue. You need to know it from the bottom-up. You cannot go in there with a college application and be accepted. You need to have personality and listening classes, which are not taught in pharmacy. You have to decide before you ever get into it if you’re willing to do the work. Most people don’t realize that you have to study all the time. You just have to keep up.

Passionate about:
Continuing to learn and change with the pharmaceuticals industry. I’ve had several odd jobs in my day and they may not have been exactly what I thought I was going to get when I started. But by the time I got done, they were, because I chose to show companies how I could help them better if they did such and such. Most people just sit there, do the job and dispense drugs – they don’t sell themselves.

Biography Excerpt:
Cynthia G. Johansen is a clinical pharmacist consultant who contracts with several agencies, providing them with valuable evaluations and advice on medications and prescriptions that they dispense to their patients. She has a profound interest in serving the general public, helping them to gain the very best medical help that they can – as far as medications go. A typical day for Ms. Johansen includes interacting with physicians, pharmacists and case managers to review medications for clients, reviewing patients' charts, interviewing clients and writing reports. Her experience comes from working in a variety of settings in order to learn what is right for the patient. For instance, she worked at a children’s hospital for 10 years on purpose, so that she can learn more about the specific needs of children and better serve them.

Interview Excerpt

Cambridge Who's Who: What is the most significant issue facing your profession today?
CYNTHIA G. JOHANSEN R.PH., BS, MS, CLINICAL PHARMACIST CONSULTANT:  The Government Health Care bill which passed on March 21, 2010.

Really?
You bet. Socialized medicine is the worst thing that will ever happen in the world. It’s not going to do anything for anybody. Besides that, they’re going to be rationing healthcare and it’s going to be like England’s system, where the older people don’t necessarily get care because the panels will look at how old they are and how many more years they’ve got. If there’s a person who is 20 years younger who needs a bypass operation, they’re going to get it.

What advice can you offer people aspiring to work in this profession?
