Why
F
is an Expert:
Urology, because I have been in it for 19 years.
Best Advice:
Stay current with all the issues in the area that you work and always put the patient first.
Passionate about:
We have a lot of older patients. I feel bad that the cost of medications can be too high for them, where they have to make choices about what medications they will take. I would like to be an advocate for the older patients who need these things.
Biography Excerpt:
Jan L. Nau is a staff nurse at Affiliated Urology Specialists, Ltd., where she has loyally served for 19 years. She began her career in healthcare as a medical-surgical nurse, assisting doctors in the intense and rigorous operating room setting. After 25 years, Ms. Nau took a nursing position in an office setting. After a period of adjustment, she fell in love with her work at Affiliated Urology Specialists, where she was able to begin establishing closer relationships with patients than she could in the operating room. “Some of them, you’ve seen for years,” she points out. Oftentimes, for Ms. Nau, the long-term, intimate setting helps to make a difficult situation easier. More importantly, patients at Affiliated Urology Specialists gain the proper attention, care and treatment that they require.

Cambridge Who's Who:
What is the most difficult obstacle or challenge you have faced in pursuit of your goals?
JAN
L.
NAU
RN: When I left surgery and went into urology, it was different than I thought to work in the office setting. It was a bit of a challenge to get where I wanted to be in that situation. I was in a hospital setting for 25 years. Now I’ve been in the office setting for 19 years.
Has training changed over the years?
I think healthcare professionals are trained not to spend the time with the patients like we were when I first started. When you spend time with the patients, you learn how to give the care that the patient needs.
What is the most significant issue facing your profession today?
In the office – and I would think this reflects the country at large – we are seeing more and more people who have lost their jobs and are without insurance, who require healthcare. We also see people without insurance who are able to go on a monthly plan so they can pay it off. You can’t refuse to see them, but it can become a burdensome expense on them
