She was the owner of Warwick Medical and Professional Center and the founder of Windmill Point Restaurant, Rentals on the Ocean at Nags Head in North Carolina, SEBROF Corporation Construction company and Mary B. Forbes Land Corporation at Newport News in Virginia.

Early in Dr. Forbes’ career, she thrived in an era when women in the medical field of obstetrics and gynecology were rarely accepted; she paved the path for other females pursuing a profession in healthcare. Through her own contracting firm, Dr. Forbes developed the Warwich Medical and Professional Center. A legacy to the Newport News community, it consists of seven buildings totaling more than 100,000 square feet of office space housing doctor’s offices, surgical facilities and educational space for Christopher Newport University (CNU). Additionally, those Dr. Forbes mentored as undergraduates and graduates have progressed to become leaders in medicine, science, education and law.

Dr. Sarah Elizabeth Forbes' persistence in providing excellent gynecological care to her patients, along with her extensive knowledge of women’s healthcare, has earned the respect and admiration of colleagues and patients along the eastern seaboard. In the past 48 years, she has taken the initiative to grow professionally with her original patient base while expanding her knowledge and care to the fields of family care and geriatrics. She is the recipient of scores of awards and distinguished honors, among them: The Women of the Year in Business and Industry, Boys and Girls Club Medallion Award, formal recognition by the members of the United States Senate and Congress for her "unwavering commitment to serving the healthcare needs of military families," the Commonwealth of Virginia 39th Annual Humanitarian Award.

     

Cambridge Who's Who: What is your philosophy as a doctor and a healthcare provider?  
DR. SARAH ELIZABETH FORBES :  To provide proper medical care and not only be technically qualified to practice medicine, but also to have special passion for my work, a disciplined intellect, wisdom to learn, compassion to care and moral self-discipline. To continue in the learning process to improve the art of curing the ill and caring for the wounded.

What obstacles or challenges are you facing lately?
From many physicians’ perspective, the government has adopted reimbursement methodologies and payment rules to decrease Medicare expenses; private insurers have taken the same steps. This has made it difficult to maintain the healthcare our patients deserve. Patients are challenged, having treatment in accordance with "what insurance pays for." The patients suffer; the insurance companies build skyscrapers.

So health insurance is a major issue facing your profession today?
I am certain medical insurance laws surpass even the IRS Tax Code in terms of complexity and volume. Physicians and staff, chiefly concerned with a patient's health, are required to devote inordinate effort and time complying with administrative rules.
