Why He is an Expert:
I consider myself an expert because of my knowledge, experience and compassion. I think that compassion is important with medicine.

Best Advice:
Anyone considering a career in medicine really needs to find a mentor, someone with whom they can spend time. Biography Excerpt:
Dr. Stephen R. Adcock doesn’t want to kill the dream for anyone who has ever aspired to become a doctor, but nonetheless, he is a realist through and through. He warns that for one to pursue a career in the medical field, they must first realize that it takes a high level of dedication and a substantial investment of time and resources. Dr. Adcock, a doctor in the Orthopedic Department of the Satilla Regional Medical Center, is still amazed that with many professions, not just in medicine, college students pick majors without having any idea what they’ll entail. “No one in their family does it or they have never been onsite, such as in a classroom or an operating room,” he elaborates. “You need to make the right choice.”

Interview Excerpt

Cambridge Who's Who: What would you like to promote most about yourself or your business?
MR. STEPHEN R ADCOCK MD:  I am currently in private practice, which involves being tied up on weekends and holidays. But I would like to eventually leave private practice at some point and go elsewhere and still be using my expertise. I would certainly be interested in using my knowledge and experience to benefit others. For example, I have done some medical-legal work on the side. I was raised to be honest and fair and I think I could weigh things and use my area of expertise to say what is right or wrong.

What are your short-term and long-term career goals?
My short-term goal is to do the best job that I can. There is a reason why it is called a “practice” of medicine. We’re never perfect, we never know everything and there are constant advances. The techniques that I learned 20 years ago may not be considered state-of-the-art. There is always this ongoing quest to keep up and get better. My long-term goal is to make some sort of transition, such as to go into arbitration or teaching — both of my parents were teachers.

Who have been your mentors or people who have greatly influenced you?
My brother, who is 13 years older, was a great influence. He was a doctor while I was still young enough to decide. Through him, I gained some idea of what it meant to be an orthopedic surgeon. The chairman of my department, Dr. Harjess from the University of Louisville, was also an influence.
