Biography Excerpt:
When asked to give her definition of integrity, Terri J. McCormick simply replied, “Service over self.” Drawing on more than two decades of experience in government relations, she believes that if people could follow this mantra as families, as communities, and as a nation once again, they could achieve greatness. Born on United Nations Day, Ms. McCormick always believed she would be involved with government. She is currently the president and chief executive officer of McCormick Dawson CPG Ltd, a consulting and publishing group that provides government relations, advertising, materials development, and training and assessment services on a contractual basis. In addition, throughout her lengthy career in public policy, she has been an author, policy expert and educator, and is a former state representative to the Wisconsin State Legislature, serving from 2000 to 2006. She has written a book titled “What Sex is a Republican?” with the purpose of calling on each individual to serve in their local, state or federal government.

Cambridge Who's Who: What lessons have you learned as a professional in your field for the past 21 years?
MS. TERRI J MCCORMICK :  The ability to put together experts in various fields and then direct the energy toward a single goal is the greatest leadership talent you could ever use. For some people in my field, first you have to understand that you are probably not the expert in everything. So go out there and create collaborative environments or opportunities to pull the best of the best into one room and then harness that energy for good.

What is the most difficult obstacle or challenge you have faced in pursuit of your goals?
As a woman, the greatest obstacle for me was to come to the realization that you can’t do everything all at once. You can do everything, just not all at the same time. That meant that I needed to take career breaks when I had children and prioritize my time. If you put your family first as my parents did for me, then you can never go wrong.

What changes have you observed in your industry/field since you started?
We see the transition of social media and real-time communications with individuals able to tap into the news anytime, day or night. However, access to communication will require that individuals going into government relations and public relations must be on top of their communications profession, both from a social media standpoint and from a newspaper relation, and also face-to-face.
