Interview Excerpt

Cambridge Who's Who: What is your greatest professional accomplishment to date?
MRS. PAULINE R RIEMER :  The Public Welfare Department sued a woman for abandonment of a child. We had placed the child in Utica Children’s Hospital and discovered that the child suffered from osteogenesis imperfecta, a genetic disorder in which bones break easily. The mother was clearly not responsible for the child’s bones being broken—that’s the nature of the disease. The impression was that that child would not live much longer. I explained to the judge that the mother did not put the child in the hospital; she was doing the best she could for him. The judge got the picture right away and the case was closed. I also helped a lady with four children leave their home at 4:00 AM, in order to get away from a very abusive and threatening husband and father after being told by the police that there was nothing they could do to help. I drove them all the way from Auburn to the airport in Syracuse where they flew to stay with a family member.

How do you remain current in your profession?
I’m still a member of the National Association of Social Workers and read their journals.

What is the most difficult obstacle or challenge you have faced in pursuit of your goals?
The most difficult obstacle is trying to make people understand the field of social work because it was such a new industry 47 years ago. However, today the most difficult obstacles are funding and education.
