Why He is an Expert:
Mr. Gueldner has more than a quarter of a century of professional experience. Working with the Johnson & Johnson Company Naramco in Athens, Georgia as an analytical chemist, he developed methods of analysis to prove the purity of their pharmaceuticals. He also worked on developments for the processes used to produce the pharmaceuticals. His appreciation for the field of science also contributes to his strengths in pharmaceuticals. “I like the combination of chemistry and biology – how the world works in terms of all the organisms that are out there.”

Best Advice:

Passionate about:
“I’ve been exposed to etymology and some of the pathological aspects of that. These pesticides that have been used have been damaging in some cases. The genetic thing they’re doing with plants isn’t always a good thing – some farmers are not satisfied with that. It seems like it was a real godsend, but farmers are not unanimous about that.”

Interview Excerpt

Cambridge Who's Who: What would you consider your greatest professional accomplishment to date?
MR. RICHARD C GUELDNER :  The synthesis of the boll weevil sex hormones – there are four compounds that they needed to make in quantity so that they could test them in the field. I received a patent for that work.

Do you get any trade publications sent to you?
I get Chemical & Engineering News.

What would you like to promote most about yourself or the field of pharmaceuticals?
There are always aspects of medicinal properties, such as unexpected toxic effects [to anticipate]. A drug may appear by research to be good, but usually there are some issues that come up; some people are not tolerant to the effects of the drugs. Toxicology is a very important thing. We need to ensure that the methods used to assess the properties of the drugs are adequate. We must know the negatives and the positives of the drug.
