Interview Excerpt

Cambridge Who's Who: What is the structure of your work?
DR. SYED H ZAIDI :  I work for the federal government. We are the people who support our nation. I’m a program manager for the university research program in robotics and our weapons systems, including nuclear weapons. We are creating nano-scale sensing and manufacturing technology. They are robotic systems with very tiny robots – smaller than a hair. You can place them for testing in locations where human beings cannot go. We have achieved 90% success in that area, but we cannot release a lot of this information.

Since you work for the federal government, you don’t compete for government contracts right?
We are internal and certified, so we don''t have to compete for government contracts. If you look at what we license, we have our computer programming and networking. But we don’t license our products out; nor do we compete for the government contracts in order to conduct our research and development. Most of the time, we use the federal lab for testing our weapons systems. Additionally, we have five universities working for us, including the University of Florida, the University of Michigan, the University of New Mexico, the University of Tennessee and the University of Texas – they support me to develop the robotic system. I cannot talk too much about weapons, due to security issues.

How do you remain current in your profession?
Through my support from the universities, as well as through our work with the laboratories. We program and oversee them; they fulfill the design. We work with Los Alamos National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, Kansas City Plant, Y-12 National Security Complex, and more.
