Cambridge Who's Who:
What is the most difficult obstacle or challenge you have faced in pursuit of your goals?
DR.
PATRICIA
S.
SAKAI
PH.D.: The most difficult challenge I have faced is getting older. The older you get, the more you learn and the more you realize you don’t know that much. I started traveling to learn about the world a few years ago and that has really changed my outlook. I didn’t have the opportunity to go to school until I was working and could begin that process on my own, so I went back to school later, which is why I am even more concerned about individuals who want to have that experience and go to college. Some are bright enough, but they can’t afford it.
What advice can you offer people aspiring to work in this profession?
Study and focus on areas that are interesting to you as human beings. Pick an area that you’re happy in and that you love. You have to have a passion for it and if you don’t, you won’t be good at it.
Who have been your mentors or people who have greatly influenced you?
Two of my professors, Rodney K. Goodyear and Michael Newcomb, have greatly influenced me. Mr. Goodyear went above and beyond and gave me many opportunities to learn and co-teach classes on the counseling process, for which I had a great amount of passion.
