Interview Excerpt

Cambridge Who's Who: What is the highlight of your professional career?
JOHN LAW :  The highlight of my career was when I developed the aluminum foil pie pan. I had to go all the way 50 miles off road from Saskatoon to get all the information. That was in 1952. I’ve done a lot of work for Kirby vacuum cleaners: I’ve developed new motors and done the mechanical work, not the electrical. I just packaged it. Although I developed that reactor [a nuclear airborne reactor designed for Pratt & Whitney in 1955], it just was a prototype. It never went into production and we never had anything to test.

What is the most significant issue facing your profession today?
We should spend more time in work trades. When I was in trade school, I spent the morning in classes and in the afternoon I went to a factory. I worked with Ball & Ball carburetors and worked with my hands. It would be good to have more of the hands-on aspect in training today.

How do you remain current in your profession?
I dream up things and study them on my drawing board. I continue to come up with new ideas. I have about 10 projects going right now and the beauty of it is that I can go to my machine shop and work out the physical properties and ideas.
